What Else Did You Expect from the Insane

My favorite book, written by Ken Kesey, is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. As Ms. Serensky pointed out during class, "There are strange parallels between the book and our class" when referencing how she runs the class and we just listen to her much like Nurse Ratched and the patients. This interesting comparison along with the constant conflict between the patients, lead by McMurphy, and Nurse Ratched make it interesting and funny to read. As the conflict develops on the first day as Nurse Ratched would "rather he'd of been stark naked under that towel then had on those shorts" which makes the situation so ridiculous that one can not help but to find it funny (99). The conflict continues to develop comedy as the subjects of the conflict between the two become more insane. When McMurphy goes on strike about watching the baseball the image of  "men watching a blank TV, a fifty-year-old woman hollering and squealing at the back of their heads" can not help but be funny (145). All of these ridiculous situations eventually result in the party on the ward behind Nurse Ratched's back and the men starting to "pop and snort to keep from laughing" at what had occurred without Nurse Ratched's knowledge (311). The image of the strong figure of Nurse Ratched discovering all that occurred behind her back results in yet another comedic situation that I enjoyed. Overall the extent of the comedy and the mockery along with the important lessons the book conveys made it my favorite book of the year.
